EstateVal/GEMS Interface Tutorial

If you are a subscriber of Gillett Estate Management Suite (GEMS) GEM706 and GEMAcct software package, and use EstateVal as your source for security valuations, the EstateVal/GEMS interface can help eliminate unnecessary manual entry of data between the software packages. With this interface, the user can choose to either start from GEMS or from EstateVal.

Here's how it works:

From EstateVal to GEMS
First, you'll need to configure the Export File Format in EstateVal. Go to Tools : Options : Export and set the following:

    Type: GEMS
    Path: [export file destination]
    Schedule: B, G, E1 or E2

Now that EstateVal is configured, evaluate the portfolio as usual and export the file. To export the evaluated file, simply click on File : Export : From EstateVal : [Report Type]. You will be prompted to type in an export file name. Remember not to use special characters in the file name such as quotations, commas, less than/greater than signs, etc. If done correctly, EstateVal will indicate that "The portfolio has been exported."

Now that the file has been exported from EstateVal, we are ready to import it into either GEM706 or GEMAcct program. To do so, open the appropriate GEMS program. Now open the client and go to Utilities on the menu bar and select EVP Pricing Interface. Choose Import existing EVP portfolio, select Date of Death or Alternate Value, enter the exported file from EstateVal then click Transfer. The securities and their values are then displayed. You can select your File Import Options and select or deselect an item or items on the results page. To post the values, you'll need to click on Transfer again.

From GEMS to EstateVal

GEM706

  • Open GEMS 706 - Federal Estate Tax Returns.
  • Create a client and enter the stocks and bonds on the appropriate schedules. You must also enter the CUSIP numbers or ticker symbols and enter a temporary description.
  • When ready to send securities for pricing, go to Utilities on the menu bar and select EVP Pricing Interface. You will be asked to select Date of Death or Alternate Value. You should download the date of death value first.
  • After you click Transfer, it will automatically look for the EstateVal executable at the default directory (c:\Program Files\EVP Systems). In cases where EstateVal is on a different location other than the default, you will have to open GEMS.ini located in the program directory of GEMS, and edit the Path under [EVP].
  • Once EstateVal is found, the EstateVal splash screen will be displayed and the user should click OK. The securities are sent for valuation and GEM706 displays the results.
  • You can select your File Import Options and select or deselect an item or items on the results page. To post the values, the user should click Transfer again.

A more detailed tutorial is found under the Help menu of the GEM706 program. To get there, go to the Help menu, select GEM706 Manual and go to Chapter 11 Utilities, Section 11.07 EVP Pricing Interface, pages 194-196.

    GEMAcct

  • Open GEMS Acct - Fiduciary Accountings.
  • Create a client and enter the stocks and bonds in the inventory. You must also enter the CUSIP numbers or ticker symbols listed in their classification.
  • When ready to send securities for pricing, go to Import on the menu bar and select EVP Pricing Interface. (Make sure to refer to the GEMAcct Manual for details and instructions on what to select and what to do with your account(s) before sending for valuation.) You will be asked to select Acquisition, Alternate Value or Fair Market Value. If you elect to perform a fair market valuation, you must also enter the date.
The securities are sent for valuation and GEMAcct displays the results.
  • You can select your File Import Options and select or deselect an item or items on the results page. To post the values, the user should click Transfer again.

A more detailed tutorial is found under the Help menu of the GEMAcct program. To get there, go to the Help menu, select GEMAcct Manual and go to Chapter 10 Utilities, Section 10.07 EVP Pricing Interface, pages 220-223.
